CHAPTER TEN

EMERSON

Entering the two-story sorority house, I realize the Theta Kappa Gamma party checks off every one of my expectations.

Music I don’t listen to. ✔️

People I don’t know. ✔️

The smell of beer and sweat. ✔️

My anxiety at an all-time high. ✔️✔️

The dead pig roasting on a spit out on the front lawn was a surprise, though, not to mention seeing Steel in a Hawaiian shirt. Glancing at him beside me in the bright, floral shirt has me giggling. I’ve never seen him in any color but black, brown, and gray before. Steel groans when he catches me laughing at him, and it only has me shaking harder. He squeezes my hand, silently telling me to knock it off, but he doesn’t let go after I’ve stopped chuckling, nor do I pull away. And that’s how we enter the party—holding hands.

Surprisingly, having him near me, looking equally ridiculous and uncomfortable, eases my anxiety and fills me with a confidence I normally wouldn’t have. I’m not alone. In fact, I’m walking into the most popular sorority house on campus on the arm of the most infamous and hottest guy here. I only wish everyone from Franklin could see this. No, I take that back. New start, Emerson. New start. You’re not the dean’s daughter here.

Every head seems to turn our way as we push forward into the crowd. This is the bad part about being with Steel. I thought he’d be used to it by now, but he keeps scowling at the guys who look our way. Weird. He usually has no problem getting along with other dudes, even the frat types. Come to think of it, he’s been acting odd since he came to pick me up.

I turn to Steel and straight-out ask him, “What’s with you?”

For a change, his gray eyes aren’t smiling when he looks at me, and his voice is flat. “What do you mean?”

“You’re in a bad mood.”

“No, I’m not,” he says testily, negating his statement. I arch my eyebrow, letting him know that I call bullshit.

“Yeah, you are. Ever since I opened my door and you demanded to know where my glasses were.”

“I was just surprised, that’s all,” he says, popping open the top button of his shirt and roughly adjusting the polyester collar. Despite his slim frame and the wild shirt, he looks as ferocious as a bouncer standing there, crossing his muscular arms. The slight stubble on his chin makes him look more rugged tonight too. Not to mention his viewable tats.

“Hmph,” I huff. “And then you made fun of my outfit.”

Steel jolts as if I pushed him, letting his arms fall to his side. “I did not! I only asked where you got that dress.”

Remembering his displeased reaction when he first saw me still rankles. Why couldn’t he have just lied and said that I looked nice? I try not to fidget or tug the bluish-purple, knit tank dress lower. April is several inches shorter than me, so the skirt keeps riding up my thighs.
